Property Damage As A Result Of Hurricane Harvey

When a catastrophic disaster hits the Texas coast, homes, towns, and lives are literally blown or washed away. Hurricane Harvey inflicted unprecedented horror on the people, property, and communities of the Texas coast. The damage from this storm spans the nearly the entire Texas coastline, covering 53 counties and millions of people. As those affected by Hurricane Harvey return to their homes and jobs, here’s what you need to know about damage to your home.

What do you do now?

  • Get a copy of any and all insurance policies. This includes property, windstorm, flood, automobile, and any other type of insurance.
  • Place all insurers on notice of a potential claim. Each policy may have different notice requirements and deadlines with which you must comply. Notifying your agent alone may suffice, but it is better to put each carrier on notice directly and in writing.
  • Document everything! Gather documents to support your loss, including photographs, videos, receipts, and any other information that could support your claim for all types of damages. Make sure to include costs related to the emergency and its aftermath.
  • Mitigate your damages. Under your policy and the law, you have the duty to mitigate your damages. This means that you need to do what you reasonably can to protect further loss or damage. Get a qualified contractor involved immediately!
  • Beware of scammers. Unfortunately, there are those who prey on hurricane victims. Houston Police have already put out a warning about some people posing as FEMA inspectors. Many other horror stories exist regarding contractors who run away with your money without doing any work, or public adjusters who file a claim without your knowledge. Be on alert, do your research, and don’t sign anything without fully reading and understanding what you are signing.
