Takata Defective Airbag Recall Continues to Grow

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) has been hot on the heels of Takata since it was revealed in November of 2014 that they had produced millions of dangerously defective airbags. Even worse, the Japanese manufacturing company seems to have known about the hazards for years. In the last days of 2015, the NHTSA has discovered even more problematic airbags and has called for the mandatory recall of another four vehicle models.

The latest additions to the Takata airbag recall are:

  • Mazda6 (2005 – 2008)
  • Honda CR-V (2002 – 2004)
  • Subaru Legacy (2005 – 2008)
  • Subaru Outback (2005 – 2008)

If you have any of these vehicles, please be aware that your airbag could pose a serious danger to you and your passengers’ wellbeing. Takata airbags are being recalled due to their explosive tendencies, which can send sharp shrapnel flying upon detonation in a car accident, or sometimes without a clear reason. Several deaths have been linked to these defective airbags.

NHTSA Pushes for a March Deadline

It seems that Takata airbags are more prone to violent, unexpected catastrophic failures in regions with high humidity. The NHTSA has demanded that automakers selling vehicles in such areas complete recalls or replacements no later than March 2016. They are also attempting to prioritize the recalls so that the most dangerous models are handled sooner than the rest. With 30,000,000+ vehicles affected, it is a tall order to fill, though.

In reaction to this growing problem, lawsuits and mass torts are being filed against Takata, who is already facing up to $200 million in fines issued by the NHTSA if they fail to handle the situation accordingly.
