In the past decade, e-cigarettes, or e-cigs, have become a popular alternative
to standard cigarettes. Marketed as a healthier alternative to traditional
smoking, numerous Americans turned to vaping, the term for using an e-cigarette.
Unfortunately, numerous e-cigarette users have reported serious problems
with the devices in connection to their batteries.
The rechargeable batteries that power most e-cigarettes have been known
to overheat, which has caused severe burns and explosions, seriously harming
users. One of the leading manufacturers of e-cigs, KangerTech, is one
of many companies facing lawsuits for the injuries caused by their products,
as well as failure to adequately warn the public of potential dangers.
The dangerous nature of e-cigs comes from the lithium batteries and a frequent
incompatibility with the chargers. There have also been issues associated
with the heating element in the devices, which malfunctions, causing certain
mechanisms to react and cause explosions or extreme overheating. There
have been reports of e-cigarettes bursting into flames while charging,
or exploding while sitting dormant in a user’s pocket. As one could
image, any of these instances can cause serious injuries.
Victims of faulty e-cigs have reported facial burns, hand injuries, leg
burns, as well as other injuries resulting from reactions to an e-cigarette
explosion. For example, one victim reported that her e-cigarette exploded
while she was driving, which eventually led her car to catch fire and
caused her to crash. The FDA received 134 reports of vape-related fires
and explosions between 2009 and 2016, and the number has only grown since then.
Although most of the e-cigarette malfunctions occur because of a charging
issue, many explosions have taken place while the e-cig was not being
charged. In fact, one study found that roughly one-third of the explosions
happened while the e-cig was either in use or in the user’s possession,
usually being carried in a purse or pocket.
If you or someone you love was injured as the result of a KangerTech e-cigarette,
or any other brand, you may have a right to compensation for your injuries.
