A California man has filed a lawsuit against actors Tom Hanks and Rita
Wilson in regards to an alleged 2015
drunk driving car accident involving their 25-year-old son, Chet Hanks. According to the details
of the lawsuit as published by
People.com, Chet Hanks is accused of rear-ending plaintiff Terry Moogan on a highway
in Los Angeles while driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.
The lawsuit alleges that both Hanks and Wilson allowed their son to use
their vehicle despite having knowledge of his intoxication and, as the
owners of the vehicle, should be held financially responsible for the
resulting damages. Moogan claims to have suffered whiplash and an unspecified
brain injury in the collision, citing physical and emotional damages.
Chet Hanks has been publicly open about his struggles with substance abuse
and completed a stint in rehab last summer. Despite his background, however,
Chet was not charged with DUI after the accident as the police were not
called. According to Moogan’s legal team, Chet begged him not to
call the police after the accident.
This lawsuit illustrates the critical importance of carefully investigating any
car accident claim to determine who was negligent in causing or contributing to an
accident. As this example suggests, even if a person may not even be present
at the time of a crash, they may still have some level of responsibility.
Since proving this liability can be an uphill battle, it is vital you
retain the services of a powerful legal team to protect your rights and
ensure the responsible parties are held accountable for their actions.
