Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have
begun searching for the cause of the deadly train collision in Panhandle,
Texas. On Tuesday, June 28th, 2016, two BNSF freight trains collided with each other at around 8:25
a.m., resulting in a derailment and fire. Only one of the four total crew
members aboard the trains survived the collision.
NTSB investigators are unsure why the two trains were on the same rail,
though footage from both of the trains’ onboard digital video recorders
could provide insight. The investigation is expected to last for at least
four to five days. Railroad Accident Investigator Richard Hipskind led
a news conference on the investigation, saying that “[The NTSB’s]
mission is to understand not just what happened, but why it happened,
and to make recommendations or changes to prevent it from happening again.”
The names of the deceased and injured crewmembers have yet to be released.
